Press Release: Fall 2010 inspired by "Brazil '66"

Ipanema Beach

For inspiration this season, I looked back to the explosive music scene of Brazil in the 1960’s.

Along with the political unrest of the time came a revolution in music – a blending of Brazilian and African styles from which new forms like “Samba”, “Bossa Nova” and “Son” were born…

This “fusion” jazz was a big part of my childhood as much of my family was involved in it, including my uncle, famous 60’s trombonist Kai Winding. My house was always filled with the s****y sounds of Latin greats like Sergio Mendes, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Gilberto Gil.

I wanted to incorporate some of this romantic energy into the Fall season, so you’ll see pleated ruffles and soft flounces, fine cotton-batiste and flowy silks. We sifted through archives of botanical prints, elaborate paisleys and colorful broad-stripes of the era, and developed feminine florals like “Tropicalismo”, flounced silks like “Lula”, bold checks like “Ipanema” and intense paisleys like “Postcards from Rio”…

We hope you enjoy our little burst of Latin flavor as much as we did putting it together for you!
